High Country Bee, Edition 2, Volume 8, August, 2013

August 2, 2013 Beth Conrey blog

August is upon us and that means it is FAIR TIME!  I hope you participate in your county fair.  The Boulder County Beekeepers Association is even going to submit a float this year!   I hope to be part of the festivities.  Congratulations to member Joe Fennessy in Meeker who pummeled the competition to grab the gold for his fabulous bee booth at the Routt County Fair.  I am going to post a picture of his award-winning booth on Facebook.

Many of the fairs in Northern CO are beginning to add honey classes to the judging in foods.  Be sure to enter your honey—if you still have some.  If your fair does not have a honey class, pester them to include it next year.

I have been on the road for the past few days.  Mike and I went and ran the Arkansas on Wednesday then on to our land in South Fork then up to Creede.  The yellow sweet clover is simply fabulous in this part of the state and I hope it translates into a wonderful honey crop.  Fishing was mighty fine, too.

Non-Profit Status

The CSBA FINALLY! has the non-profit status letter in our hands!  This has been a long-time in the making and I am grateful for the assistance of Fred Powell, CSBA secretary, in making it happen.  I believe this will allow us to procure some funding for some much needed research and will open up opportunities that I cannot even foresee.  Many of you have requested a copy of “the letter” for one reason or another, and, if you not yet received a copy and still need one, please send me an email and I will send it to you.  The letter is handy for procuring reduced room rates at venues and for reduced rates at fairs.

Scott Hoffman Black

Scott Hoffman Black is Executive Director of the Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation http://www.xerces.org. The Colorado State Beekeepers Association, along with Colorado State University and the Denver Museum of Science and Nature, will be hosting Scott Hoffman Black on September 24th through 26th, 2013. On September 24th, he will be lecturing at the Alexander Dawson School in Lafayette in the evening. On the 25th, at the CSU campus at noon. (Scott is a CSU graduate.) The Denver Museum of Nature and Science will host him the evening on September 26th. Please plan on attending. Further details, including times and fees (if any) will be forthcoming shortly.

Help Wanted

The CSBA is in need of some computer help.  Our webmaster has decided to resign and we could use some serious power on social media.  Believe it or not, there is actually a little bit of money in it for you to do one or the other or both.  If you possess the skills, and the interest, in helping on either of these fronts (or know someone who does), please give me a shout at 970-213-3099 or email at president@coloradobeekeepers.org.

Gary McCallister has also announced his resignation as the Colorado Coordinator for National Honeybee Day.  National Honeybee Day is August 17th.  The CSBA would like to further promote this event and could use a statewide coordinator to volunteer for this position.  For more information, as well as ideas on what other states are doing, please visit the National Honeybee Day website: http://www.nationalhoneybeeday.com.

Thank you to both Tim Hardy and Gary McCallister for their services and good luck on your future endeavors.

CSBA Traveling Road Show

The CSBA Traveling Road Show has been receiving accolades from all corners of the State.  What is the Road Show you ask?  It is where CSBA Officers and Directors travel to your area and conduct hive inspections.  In some areas, we are also doing a disease diagnostic clinic, too.  The CSBA management team is chock full of years and years of experience.  I would guess, well over one hundred and possibly approaching two!  If this is something your group is interested in participating in, drop us a line and we’ll see if we can get a date figured out to bring the road show to yet another stop.   There is no charge for the service—although we do need lunch.

Of Interest

The Western Apicultural Society  (WAS) will be holding their annual conference in Santa Fe, NM this year.  Conference dates are October 16-19, 2013.  Click here for more information.

Save the date!  The CSBA Winter Meeting will be held on November 9th.  Featured speaker will be Dave Mendes.

As always, if you have any questions or issues, please do not hesitate to call or email.

Thank you for being a member.
