Summer is here in Colorado as we all know from the clouds of forest fire smoke in the air.  Sadly, CSBA Treasurer and Black Forest Honey owner, John Hartley’s home burnt in the Black Forest fire.  John and his wife Donna escaped unscathed along with their dog and some important possessions but lost their home and their apiary.  Our thoughts and wishes go out to John and Donna during this time of hardship.  Kudos to both of them for coming to the Summer Meeting even though their house had burnt down just 4 days previously!  As they put it, they were going to be in a hotel room somewhere, might as well be amongst their fellow beekeeping friends.

Summer Meeting Recap

Thank you to all who attended the CSBA Summer Meeting in Silt!  The meeting was a big success with approximately 90 attendees from all over the state.  There were beekeepers from as far away as Meeker, Lamar, and Durango with solid attendance from the Western CO beekeepers association as well as the Front Range beekeeping clubs.  Of course, there were folks that were unable to make it due to the fire situation, too.  Nanci Limbach had expanded her presentation room in the last year and we still packed it to the gills!  I just LOVE having the meeting at Paul and Nanci’s property.  It is beautiful.  Next year, however, we may need to consider having the lectures in Glenwood and the picnic and the hands-on workshops at the Limbach property.  This may allow us the best of both worlds!  The presentations have all been posted to the CSBA site.  Thank you to my webmaster, Tim Hardy for taking care of this.

Pollinator Week

Pollinator Week was June 17-23rd and the CSBA, along with our sponsor BBB Seed, set up multiple booths in Boulder and Larimer counties.  The booths featured informational brochures on bees and other pollinators.  On Saturday, June 22nd, the booths were manned by BCBA and NCBA beekeepers.  Thank you to all of you who volunteered to help during Pollinator Week.  We will have a recap meeting in a couple of weeks and assess the successes as well as any improvements that need to take place before next year’s event.

If you are interested in having a Pollinator Week event in your area in 2014, call or email me at 970-213-3099 or and we will keep you in the loop next spring.  Also remember that the CSBA prints brochures that you may use for any educational or outreach events of your own.  Contact me at the number or email above if you need some sent your way.

Pollinator Week got off to a tough start with the pesticide deaths of over 50,000 bumblebees from a misused pesticide in Portland, OR.  This is the largest bumblebee poisoning on record and it is a very sad situation indeed.  The Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation is based in Portland and issued this statement in response.  It is well worth the read.  Here is a link to a video, too:

Scott Hoffman Black, Executive Director of the Xerces Society, to speak on the Front Range

The Colorado State Beekeepers Association, along with Colorado State University and NOW and NEW, the Denver Museum of Science and Nature, will be hosting Scott Hoffman Black on September 24th through 26th, 2013. On September 24th, he will be lecturing at the Alexander Dawson School in Lafayette in the evening. On the 25th, at the CSU campus at noon. (Scott is a CSU graduate.) The Denver Museum on Nature and Science will host him the evening on September 26th. Please plan on attending. Further details, including times and fees (if any) will be forthcoming shortly.

From the American Bee Federation

The ABF is currently seeking proposals for presentations for the 2014 North American Beekeeping Conference & Tradeshow. The conference will be held at the River Center in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, January 7-11, 2014. All selected presenters will receive complimentary registration to the conference.

Please make your membership aware of this opportunity and encourage them to complete the “Call for Papers” form. The conference committee will review all submissions and advise of acceptance by early September. The deadline to submit a proposal is Friday, August 16, 2013. We would greatly appreciate any assistance you can provide in spreading the word about this opportunity as this is the first time the ABF has utilized a “Call for Papers” system for creating the conference agenda.

Should you have any questions regarding this request, please contact Tara Zeravsky, Conference Manager, at

Another one bites the dust…

Thank you to member Matt Swedbergh who single-handedly got the Town of Mead to adopt a bee ordinance.  Way to go Matt!

Folks–if you are in a place that does not support beekeeping, please call upon the CSBA to give you a hand in getting the situation corrected.  Much of the public, and many municipalities, are very aware of the crisis regarding bees and the timing is GREAT to get these archaic regulations off the books.  But–the CSBA cannot do it for you!  We need citizens to step forward and perform their civic duty and get the ball rolling.      A list of those mis-bee-having communities that the CSBA is aware of can be found here.

Of Interest

The Western Apicultural Society meeting will take place in Santa Fe on October 16-19th.  I will be attending and would be delighted to carpool with anyone else who is interested in going.  I can be reached at  970-213-3099 or

This is what your grocery store would look like without bees.

This month’s recipe is Strawberry Rhubarb Pie–with honey!  I think I finally perfected my Cherry Pie made with honey, too, so I will try to get that one out next.

I will be on vacation and out of both cell phone and computer range from July 8 through July 15th.

As always, if you have any questions or issues, please do not hesitate to call or email.

Thank you for being a member.
