Month: January, 2012
Welcome to the new and improved CSBA website. It contains the information that you, our membership, asked to have included at the Winter Meeting. Thanks to our webmaster, Tim Hardy, for his unflagging perseverence to get it up and running properly.
The CSBA Winter Meeting was a stunning success! It was a full house with roughly 100 attendees from all corners of the state. Brooke Fox, President/CEO of the Colorado Agricultural Leadership Foundation welcomed all to the Lowell Ranch facility. Our featured speaker was Jerry Hayes, Florida Chief Apiary Inspector talking about “Pollinator Decline”. Lunch, catered by Flying Horse Catering, was well received–and included as part of the attendance fee. Thia Walker with the Extension service conducted a cool survey of beekeeping practices and gave a preview of the new CDA Driftwatch program. Grant Grigorian, with Grampa’s Gourmet Honey spoke about his plans for a CO Honey Festival. The meeting concluded with remarks on the “State of the State” from President Beth Conrey and a brief business meeting. It was a full day! Kudos to Theresa and Terry Dorsey and Don and Marvena Shriver for their non-stop efforts at keeping things running smoothly all day.
Another highlight was the inaugural “Big Money Honey” contest. With $300 at stake for the first prize winner, the competition was ferocious! Doyen Mitchell, a Boulder County Beekeepers Association (BCBA) member took home the grand prize money, the traveling trophy and the beautiful new engraved plaque recognizing her acheivement. Second place went to John Hartley, Secretary-Treasurer of the CSBA and a member of Pikes Peak Beekeepers Association (PPBA). Third prize for his beautiful comb honey went to Paul Limbach, vice-president of the CSBA and owner of Western Colorado Honey. Thanks to our honey judges who had their hands full with the sheer number of honey entries: April Dawn Bridge, Steve Hench and Cathy Allen-Schinn.
The new year is upon us and we have not been sitting on our laurels. Check out the Calendar section for a listing of all the classes/meetings that are being held. Don’t forget to look at our “For Sale” section for information on packages and nucs. If you would like any further information included on any of the State pages, please email me at email@example.com. I promise to gitter’ done!
